What Is Matka? Meaning and History
Matka means an earthen pot. The numbers game called Satta Matka carries the word from a time when slips with numbers on them were pulled out of such a pot. The pot has long gone, yet the game still gives a result with the same two-sided shape: an open number, a close number and a pair worked out from the two.
The short answer
Satta Matka is played entirely with numbers. Each market declares two three-digit numbers per session, called pannas: one at its open time and one at its close time. A two-digit jodi is calculated from those pannas. On Satta Matka a declared result looks like 458-74-239. Nothing further is drawn. The middle pair comes from arithmetic, not from a separate draw.
From cotton prices to a clay pot
The game started in the early 1960s as betting on cotton. People wagered on the day’s first and last cotton prices as they were reported on the Bombay exchange. Those two figures each day are the reason the game still talks about an open and a close.
When the betting moved away from the cotton rates, the format stayed behind. Instead of waiting for a price, organisers drew numbers from a matka, and the pot gave the game the name it still has. Two names are credited with turning those draws into regular markets that kept set open and close times: Ratan Khatri and Kalyanji Bhagat.
Kalyanji Bhagat’s name survives in the Kalyan market. Kalyan and every other bazar follow the same arithmetic. What separates them is the timetable.

The cotton rates needed no pair in the middle. Today’s result adds one, the jodi, and it is worked out from the two pannas.

Day markets, night markets and Starline
There is no single national draw time. Every market keeps its own clock, and the hourly Starline game uses a shorter format.

Claims that do not hold up
- “Fixed numbers for sale.” A result exists only after it is declared. Whoever sells tomorrow’s panna is selling a guess made to look certain.
- “Leaked close.” Nobody can pass on a close panna before its declaration. Messages that say otherwise are scams, whichever market name they borrow.
- “The chart hides a pattern.” A chart stores past pannas and jodis. It is a record, not a formula for the next result.
Common questions
Why is it still called matka when no pot is used?
Names often outlive the objects behind them. The pot was the first way the numbers were drawn, and the word stayed with the game. On a results website, matka simply means the game and its results.
Is Kalyan a different kind of matka?
No. Kalyan builds its result exactly the way any other day or night market does. Only its timings are its own. If a word on any board is unfamiliar, the matka dictionary explains it.
A note on responsibility
Knowing where the game came from is no reason to take part in it. Anyone who plays, anywhere, must be 18 or older. The legal position on gambling is not the same in every state, so learn what your own state allows before anything else. Never use money that your household needs. Records on Satta Matka describe results already declared, and they cannot forecast the next one.
